apple patents 5d technology

Apple has been granted a host of new patents, one of which describes a technology that the document terms “5D”, allowing the fruity firm to potentially make use of both fourth and fifth dimensions.
This isn’t time and some other as yet undiscovered dimension however, but term is used to describe – as explained by PatentlyApple – the “force-vector direction” and the “magnitude of force.” Sounds like something that could be incorporated into one of those boxing arcade machines.
However the patent doesn’t stop there, as it’s incredibly broad sweeping, giving Apple rights that hint at new gaming interaction as well as media viewing. It talks of the ability to detect dynamic events over a large area, new touch screen technology, higher quality touch capacitive displays, complex touch inputs beyond simple points, tactile feedback over large areas and several more varied touch and detection based ideas.
The patent also touches on the possibility of using radar or ultrasound to detect a person’s position in the room, thereby allowing more accurate motion controls, or tailoring the viewing experience to the user. We have already seen somewhat similar technology as this, as this with the latest and greatest 3D TVs that are able to broadcast a third dimensional image to multiple viewers at varied angles.
Other parts of the patent hint at the inclusion of this sort of technology in vehicles as part of the dashboard interface. A simple use of this could be to detect the driver’s height, thereby tailoring the dials and displays to aim their information directly at his/her eyes. There’s also talk of the touch technology being used as a method of identification for starting a vehicle.

Buying an ultrabook? Consider the Windows 8 Metro factor

With Windows 8, PC makers are focusing on touch screens as the next big thing in ultrabook design. Intel says at least 40 designs are in the pipeline.

An ultrabook six months from now will make today's designs seem so last year. You can thank Windows 8 and the Metro interface for that.
The next Windows operating system -- which we now know is slated for release October 26 -- will bring touch screens to laptops. So, the standard ultrabook today sans a touch screen may seem a bit frumpy by comparison when new designs hit for the holiday season.
Intel CEO Paul Otellini said yesterday that "more than 40" touch-enabled Windows 8-based ultrabooks are in the pipeline. That would include designs like the Acer Aspire S7.
Then there are convertibles such as the dual-screen Asus Taichi. Like the more traditional clam-shell touch-enabled variety, convertible ultrabooks won't be released until Windows 8 lands in October.
But the biggest Metro-inspired design shift may be Microsoft's Surface tablet, weighing in at 903 grams. Though not officially an ultrabook (at least not yet), it's really part laptop because of a 5mm-thick keyboard that also serves as a protective cover.
Surface takes ultrabook redesign to a new level by turning the laptop paradigm on its head. All of the electronics, including an Intel Ivy Bridge processor, are behind the screen -- which, by itself, is much thinner and lighter than a standard ultrabook -- not under the keyboard.
All of the above could render a seemingly trendsetting design like Hewlett-Packard's 4-poundEnvy 14 Spectre obsolete.
"Hmm...why no touch screen? Why can't I use it as a tablet? And why so heavy?" Are questions that consumers will undoubtedly begin to ask about designs like the Envy.
So, will all of this innovation spur ultrabook market growth? Market researcher Gartner told CNET that about 6.5 million "ultramobile notebooks" (basically, ultrabooks plus the MacBook Air), were shipped worldwide in 2011. That will increase to more than 10.5 million in 2012, then 17 million in 2013.
And in 2014, the ultramobile percentage share of the laptop market should more than double, to 11 percent from 5 percent this year, according to Gartner.
That means a ton of touch-screen, convertible, and Surface designs are on the way -- which means you'll have to wait for the Windows 8 Metro interface to arrive to get the next thing in ultrabook design.

Yahoo falls prey to hackers; over 400,000 account credentials leaked

Yahoo Inc. has said it is investigating reports of a security breach that saw nearly half a million users' e-mail addresses and passwords leaking to the Internet. The company, however, confirmed the compromised user information belongs to Yahoo Voices services, previously known as Associated Content. Hackers belonging to a group called 'D33Ds Company' have claimed responsibility of the security breach.

said that only less than 5 percent of Voice accounts had still-valid passwords, but the leak of file had revealed e-mail addresses of hundreds of thousands of its users. In an emailed statement, Yahoo further said that it is working to fix the vulnerability that had caused the security breach. The company also assured of changing victim users' passwords and notifying companies with accounts that might have been compromised.
"We apologize to affected users. We encourage users to change their passwords on a regular basis and also familiarize themselves with our online safety tips at security.yahoo.com,” read the Yahoo statement.
Hackers group D33Ds Company posted a text file with the leaked information online and revealed they applied union-based SQL injection to breach the data. "We hope that the parties responsible for managing the security of this subdomain will take this as a wake-up call, and not as a threat," D33Ds said in a message accompanying the leaked data.
"There have been many security holes exploited in Web servers belonging to Yahoo! Inc. that have caused far greater damage than our disclosure. Please do not take them lightly. The subdomain and vulnerable parameters have not been posted to avoid further damage."
Meanwhile, The New York Times in its report says that the more than 400,000 usernames and passwords that have leaked included log-in information for mail, Hotmail, Comcast, MSN, Verizon, AOL, SBC Global and Live.com accounts. According to the U.S.-based Security Firm Rapid 7, the information features 106, 000 Gmail account credentials.
"The most alarming part of the entire story was the fact that the passwords were stored entirely unencrypted," the security firm said in its blog.
Yahoo's data breach comes days after professional social network LinkedIn suffered a similar data breach, which saw leaking of over six million passwords leaking to the Internet.
There have been numerous instances of the websites of the Internet companies and governments across the world falling prey to such targeted attacks. Back in India, we recently saw the notorious hackers group Anonymous conducting frequent attacks on the Indian sites.
The Indian government has also confirmed of its websites including those Planning Commission, the Finance Ministry and other State government agencies suffering such targeted attacks.
Yahoo is one of the major brands on the web and its vulnerability to cyber attacks evidently specifies the need for more fool-proof security mechanics on the Internet, perhaps on a global scale.

    Laptop Battery Tips & Tricks

Laptops are outselling desktops than ever before. And a perennial gripe with most laptop users is how to maximise their notebook’s battery life -- we all desire laptops with humongous battery life, don’t we?
Here are a few pointers on helping you get the most out of your laptop battery.
    1) Maximize battery life
The component that consumes the most battery power of your laptop is its screen. To ensure maximum possible run time of your laptop battery, be sure to dim your display whenever possible and especially when you aren’t connected to an AC supply.
In addition to that, disabling services such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi network connections when they aren’t being used will also save you valuable battery power. Disconnecting external devices like USB flash drives when you’re done transferring data to or from them will also extend battery life.
    2) Never charge your laptop’s battery constantly
A battery constantly kept at full charge will degrade at a faster rate, hence never keep your laptop (and its battery) connected to mains constantly. If you connect your laptop to an AC supply most of the time, the battery’s capacity to hold charge will reduce quicker than normal. Plug a laptop’s battery for charging when the charge drains below 15% and try not to unplug the laptop’s battery while it’s in the middle of its charging cycle. Also remember that fully discharging a battery isn’t recommended as it stresses the Li-ion battery and can be detrimental.
    3) Don’t remove your laptop’s battery when it’s plugged into a power source
We’ve seen some people do this -- they charge their laptop battery to the max and unplug the battery while working on their laptop connected to AC mains. They do this to have a fully-charged battery whenever they have to move away from the power source and have to use their laptop on the go.
This practice can lead to your laptop shutting down involuntarily if there’s a power cut in your neighbourhood. Only remove the battery from your laptop (when it’s connected to mains) if your laptop’s overheating (around 60 C and above) and don’t make it a habit of working on your laptop constantly connected to AC supply, allow your laptop battery to charge and discharge periodically.
    4) Store a battery in a cool place
If you don’t intend to use your laptop for more than two weeks or if you have an extra battery that won’t be used for a long time, make sure you get the battery level down to 50 percent charge before unplugging it from your laptop. And remember to store it in a cool place.
Why? Because heat causes a battery to degrade at a faster rate, hence it’s always best to minimize the battery’s exposure to heat. Make sure you aren’t blocking the laptop’s heat vents when working on it from your lap. Also some laptops come with Intel’s Advanced Cooling Technology to improve airflow so that it can run cooler. Avoid storing your laptop in a car for long where it can easily overheat.
    5) Charging and discharging your laptop’s battery
Most modern-day laptops have Lithium ion batteries, free of memory effect, so it’s unnecessary to do full charge and discharge cycle on them on a daily basis like other battery types -- NiCd and NiMH. But remember, doing a full discharge and charge cycle at least once in every 40 to 50 charge cycles will help keep your battery’s fuel gauge accurate.
    6) Replacing a laptop’s battery
Among all electronic components in a device running on battery, its battery is probably the most susceptible to reduced capacity due to constant usage and gradual aging. In a laptop, the battery’s charge holding capacity will gradually reduce with the number of charge / discharge cycles it has endured. This will directly impact your laptop’s standy time, as it will become lesser and lesser.
Since laptop usage is unique from person to person, so is its effect on the laptop’s battery. We generally see a brand new laptop’s battery behaving well and optimally (with proper precaution) for up to a year after its purchase. After that, it can only go downhill. But we recommend replacing a laptop’s battery when it cannot hold a full charge and you don’t get any standby time from it, or when its current run time falls significantly below its original run time.

Angry Birds trilogy coming to a console near you

Activision and Rovio have confirmed that an Angry Birds trilogy for consoles is under development.
The trilogy will contain the original Angry Birds game, Seasons, and Rio, but will not include the recently released Angry Birds Space.
Designed for the PlayStation 3Xbox 360, and Nintendo 3DS, the games will be packaged on one disc or on a cartridge for the 3DS. According to IGN's online store and media reports, the trilogy is pegged for release in December this year.

According to Jarvilehto, it will contain cinematic extras and as yet undisclosed additional features unique to the console versions of the game, and the graphics will be high-resolution and tailored to large screens.
Jarvilehto confirmed that individual leaderboards will make an appearance on each level.
"The backgrounds have been animated, we've added lighting modes, reactive backgrounds, the list goes on and on," Jarvilehto said. "We believe that there are a lot of people on the consoles who appreciate a great casual game play experience. This is a game that resonates across a wide audience on many platforms."
In addition, the Xbox 360 version will offer Kinect support, the PlayStation 3 version will get PS Move support and StreetPass will be facilitated on the 3DS.
Angry Birds flew to fame after being released for iOS and Android devices. It is now also available as a browser-based game and in a version tailored for Facebook.

VLC for Android beta hits Google Play store

The beta version of VLC media player has finally landed in the Google Play store. The VLC for Android app, also being known as Neon, supports select Android devices that are powered by ARMv7 CPUs – which means some entry-level Android phones may be left out. According to reports, the VideoLAN Organization will be rolling out more variants to support other devices.
VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player that plays most multimedia files as well as discs, devices, and network streaming protocols. This is a BETA version of the port to the Android platform. It is intended for power users and hackers. This version is NOT stable and is slower than the final version,” says VLC team on the Google Play store Speaking of features, VLC for Android plays most local video and audio files, as well as network streams, similar to what you get in the desktop version of VLC. The app also features a media library for media files and lets you browse folders directly. It also has support for mult-track audio and subtitles. The app supports auto-rotation, aspect-ratio adjustements and gestures to control volume. Moreover, the app has a widget for audio control, and supports audio headsets control.
