Ubuntu Mobile OS to enter the smartphone market in 2014

In a market that's already choked with three competing mobile operating systems, Canonical has announced that the Ubuntu Mobile OS will debut in 2014.

Living up to the teasers Canonical has been putting out lately, the final announcement of Ubuntu’s Mobile OS has arrived. The Ubuntu Mobile OS will be ready to ship into mobile phones as early as 2014, and is compatible with both x86 and ARM instruction sets.
Surely, there is a bunch of people who’d be excited to see the open source OS make its way into mobile phones. Ubuntu for smartphones isn’t really a wholly new OS, but rather the same old Ubuntu with a “smartphone” interface.
The first wave of the Ubuntu flavour will be coming to Android phones later this year, given that Ubuntu Mobile OS is actually built on the existing Android kernels and drivers. Currently, only the Galaxy Nexus is certified to be able to run Ubuntu for Android.
If you’re hoping for a full vanilla Ubuntu experience, you might have to wait till 2014. Currently, there is no manufacturer or carrier tie up that Canonical has in place, but 2014 is far away and given that an Android compatible version of the OS is going to be available soon, it would give the Linux distro time to gain momentum and hopefully pick up enough traction to attract OEM partners and carrier support.
Currently, the Galaxy Nexus is the official partner device for Ubuntu’s Mobile OS and Canonical hopes that developers would take the time out to develop apps for the platform while the company uses the time to flesh out any issues the OS may have.
Relevantly, this is just one of Canonical's attempts to diversify, with the team working hard on an ARM version of Ubuntu for servers, aimed specifically at ultra-low-energy setups, or for massive cloud services. AMD is also working on ARM-based server processors, providing the hardware for the abovementioned setups.

Apple iPhone 5 coming to India on November 2, app store adopts rupee pricing

: Even as Apple iPhone 5 launch in India has been delayed by a week to November 2, the company on Friday started billing in Indian rupee on the App Store.

The move will benefit the vast app developer community that sells on the App Store as well as the users who download paid applications and content from the company's online store.

The billing so far was being done in US dollars. In comparison, Google Play Store has had INR pricing for long. Having a rupee pricing will definitely result in a big convenience for both buyers and sellers as there would be no dollar billing, making the purchase transactions easier and transparent.
Mobile apps revenue has consistently risen for both companies. Even though Google Android based smart phones have cornered more than half the total sales worldwide, Apple still retains a lion's share in paid mobile app revenues and gets almost two-third of the total app revenue generated worldwide.

Until now, Apple has paid $6.5 billion to developers selling their wares on the App Store and more than 35 billion apps have been downloaded since the online store opened in 2008, App Store currently offers over 7.5 lakh apps.

Meanwhile, shipment delays have resulted in the iPhone 5's India launch date being pushed to next Friday i.e. Novermber 2 since Apple has a fetish for launching only on a Friday. When contacted, an Apple India spokesperson refused to comment. However, a November 2 launch is certain and the stock is expected to start arriving at the master distributorsRedington IndiaBSE 0.31 % and Ingram Micro within next two to three days, sources said. The two are expected to start booking pre-orders within a day or two.

Unable to open its own stores in India for direct retail due to unfavourable regulatory requirements and hampered by the high cost of distribution in the country, Apple has tweaked its retail strategy for the flagship product. Until the last time when iPhone 4S was launched, Apple had sold directly in India through its two carrier partners AirtelBSE -0.97 % and Aircel.

A complete guide to BSNL Android Tablets

There were telephones, then there were computers, then came laptops and cellphones. But today we have these ‘all in one devices’, which can make calls, run games, browse the internet, get your presentations done and so on and so forth. These are tablet computers and as these high-end devices grow in the markets, there’s a spur in the low cost tablets as well. Leading the low cost revolution are tablets like Aakash,BSNL Tpads, Micromax funbooketc. Here’s a rundown on the BSNL Tablets or Tpad, and all you need to know about this device.
BSNL Tpad- What is it all about:
Well, with the Aakash tablet’s aggressive pricing and the hype around it, the market was left wide open for a new category of devices, the low cost tablet computers. To compete with the popularity of Aakash tablet and take the advantage of the delayed delivery of Aakash Tablets, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) entered into a Joint Venture with Pantel Technologies Pvt Ltd, a Noida based company to manufacture low cost tablet computer to directly compete as well as better the specs and features of Aakash tablets. While the Aakash comes in one version, the BSNL Tpads come in 3 variants, priced at Rs 3250, Rs. 10500 andRs. 13000 called IS701R, WS704C and WS802C respectively. These tablets are aimed at the students as well as other professional users and all run Android’s Gingerbread 2.3.3 OS.
How is BSNL Tpad different from Aakash?
Aakash or commercially known as UBISLATE 7 comes in one version with a 700 MHz processor that runs Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread operating system with 256 MB RAM. It has a built in storage of 2GB and can be expanded, has WIFI and USB slot and SIM card support with3G capability via 3G dongle. It can also play music and Full HD videos and has Document and PDF viewer. It’s a 7 inch resistive touchscreen.
BSNL Tpad IS701R is in direct competition with Aakash, because of its identical specs and pricing. Aakash is priced at Rs. 2999 and BSNL Tpad comes at Rs. 3250. IS701R has similar basic features such as 7 inch resistive screen, 256 MB RAM, USB and WIFI support with 3G capability and plays music and Full HD videos. Where this tablet differs from Aakash is the processor, camera and SIM card support. IS701R has a 1 GHZ processor a VGA camera andHDMI connectivity but does not have a SIM card slot.
The other two tablets WS704c and WS802c are the higher end devices that have features way above the Aakash tablet and IS701R including SIM card slots.
The WS704c is priced at Rs. 10500 and comes with a 1GHz processor, 7 inch capacitive touch screen, but has 512 MB RAM, 4GB internal storage that can be further expanded.Bluetooth, 3G, WIFI and USB along with HDMI are provided for connectivity and has A-GPSand Accelerometer and 2MP rear camera and VGA front camera. Sounds interesting? Well the version WS802c has even better features and is priced higher at Rs. 13000. The screen is an8 inch capacitive one and the processor is boosted to 1.2 GHz as opposed to the 1 GHz in its siblings. The other features include 3G capability, WIFI, USB, HDMI connectivity, Bluetooth, 4GB internal storage and 2MP rear and VGA front cameras. Accelerometer and A-GPS further add to the goody-bag of this device.
How to buy the BSNL Tpads?
Just like the Aakash tablets, BSNL tablets can be bought online through the websitehttp://www.pantel.in/. You can select the tablet model depending on your specification and budget and place an order. Once you submit the request you would get a booking ID confirming your order. The mode payment for now is cash on delivery. Alternatively you can place your order by given all your details over the phone by calling up the number +91 120-4805200. Also according to the company, these tablets should have been available throughretail purchases by March 2012. However that hasn’t been effectively possible so far and a preferred mode is the online purchase.
    What about after sales support?
Customers can place their service requests or complaints on their website or contact the number given above for all their after sales support requirements
